The Residue Series: Everyday Accumulation 2008

This work continues my interest in tracking everyday activites as the source for my work. It starts with performative gestures— sweeping, vacuuming and cooking in order to frame the residue of human presence, the fallout from any attempt to maintain control of my surroundings.

Specific sites were chosen: the floors of my house and studio, the surface of my stovetop, and from my front yard. Each occurred on a daily basis for a period of one month.

Afterwards, the performance transitioned into the process of casting the solid forms. In both House and Studio, the debris is suspended in layers of clear resin, casts of classically inspired forms. There are 12 pieces total, representing one year from both.

The Stovetops are the actual metal tops from the stove, left in place to collect the organic spew from cooking. After a month, the top is removed and the surface is covered with multiple layers of epoxy to seal and preserve the materials. There are currently 4 stovetops total.

Frontyard Flow focuses on debris that is thrown or blown into the front yard. The debris—discarded candy wrappers, paper fragments, cigarettes and straws, are cast into clear resin rocks, copies of selected border stones from the yard. This series is currently in process.
